    The Bats' Battle
    기금 수집 진행 중...
The Bonin flying fox (Pteropus pselaphon) is confined to the island of Bonin (Ogasawara in Japanese) which is located about 1000km to the south of Tokyo. Its long fur are almost completely black in colour except for sparse silver hairs on its body. Also known as the Bonin fruit bat, it feeds on fruits by crushing the fruits to extract the juice and spitting out the pulp. It also eats leaves if there is a short supply of fruits in the woods. The Bonin flying fox has been listed as Critically Endangered and categorised as 'vulnerable' in the Japanese Red Data Book. In 1999, the Ogasawara Office of Education published a survey which estimated that there are 100 Bonin flying foxes left. The cause of decline in population is not known but over-hunting and development are the main suspects. Logging, under-planting, deforestation and the clearing of land for the planting of sugarcane and fruits have caused the bats to lose their habitat and food. The Bonin flying fox have been protected since 1968 by the Japan's Agency of Cultural Affairs and the Environment Agency. The following year, the Japanese government designated the island of Bonin as a national monument in an attempt to protect the bats. Farmers are prohibited from destroying these bats and they use netting to prevent damage to their crops. Nevertheless, there are still occurences of illegal hunting which must be eradicted through the implementation of stricter laws and enforcement.

    Oh-mazing Osaka
에 의해 Lee Sue Ann, 프리랜서 작가
Osaka is located on the mouth of Yodo River on the main island of Honshu in Japan. The word Osaka literally means "large hill" or "large slope" but it is not known how this name was used in favour of Naniwa. Osaka was Japan's centre of politics and economy in the 5th century and the capital of Japan in the 7th century. In the 17th century when the political centre shifted to Tokyo, Osaka continued to play its role in managing the economy and distribution of goods, thus earning its reputation as the "nation's kitchen".

The Hep Five Ferris Wheel is built into the floors of the Hep Five shopping centre. The Ferris Wheel will bring you into the mall as it goes low, and gives you a spectacular bird's eye view of Osaka as it goes up high. Then head to the Universal Studios which is the 3rd movie-based theme park for a whole lot of family fun and then next to the Spa World which is touted to be the world's biggest spa with European and Asian themes.

The Osaka Aquarium's highlight is a gigantic shark that enthrals all visitors with its massiveness. Another must-see is the Osaka Castle Park, where the plum trees in the park surrounding the castle are so beautiful that the park attracts more visitors than the castle itself. A good time to visit would be in November when the Japanese celebrate the chrysanthemum festival. For your fill of Japanese art, the Tempozan Gallery located in the middle of a shopping mall has reasonable pieces while the Osaka Museum, the Human Rights Museum, the Wine Museum, the Osaka Castle Museum and the Science & Technology Museum should be able to satisfy your penchant for Japanese history and culture. You can even design and decorate your own package of ramen noodles at the Museum of Ramen Noodles!

Just like any other parts of Japan, you can take the shinkansen or the bullet train to your destinations. It is extremely convenient and highly known for its punctuality. The bus stops are usually located near the railway stations, successfully complementing the train service while cabs are also available albeit being a little expensive. There are also ferries connecting Osaka with the other islands and to Shanghai and the Kansai airport makes it easy should you want to take a flight in or out of Osaka.

What is travelling without sampling the unique fare that each place offers? Osaka is known for tessa which is raw globefish meat that is sliced so thin that you could see the patterns on the plate. Try that if you can digest raw fish, or else go for the okonomiyaki which is a pancake made of flour, eggs, shredded cabbage, meat or squid and topped with special sauce or mayonnaise.

The Osaka Takoyaki Museum at the Universal Studios is a food-oriented theme park serving Osaka's famed octopus balls and try the potentially fugu fish or pufferfish without burning a hole in your pocket at Fuguhisa. There is this unique place called Neko no Jikan ("Time for Cats") where you can enjoy your beer or drinks while cuddling its 18 resident cats of Norwegian Forest Cats, Ragdolls and Maine Coon breeds.
