| The Oriental Stork (Ciconia boyciana) is a large, white bird with black wing feathers, and a wingspan of 2.22 m. The species is characterised mainly by the red skin around its eyes, and its black bill. The young are white with orange bills. Although the female is slightly smaller than male, both sexes have similar colouration.
In the past, the Oriental Stork could be found in Japan, China, Korea and Russia, but it is now thought to be extinct in Japan and the Korean peninsula. However, in May 2007, a wild hatchling was reported in Japan for the first time in 40 years. It was the offspring of two storks who were bred in captivity.
The Oriental Stork is a solitary bird except during the breeding season. Its diet consists mainly of fish, frogs, insects, small birds and reptiles, as well as rodents. The female usually lays a clutch of between two to six eggs. The Oriental Stork is currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, as it is threatened by habitat loss and overhunting. |

Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, is one of the largest cities in the world. Due to its ancient past, the city has countless historical landmarks. The most notable of these are legacies of the Joseon Dynasty, such as: the Deoksugung Palace, which stands next to the City Hall and houses the Royal Museum; the Changdeokgung Palace, which comprises 78 acres of landscaped gardens; and Jongmyo Shrine, a garden containing the royal ancestral tablets of the Joseon Dynasty, now on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The most historically significant street in Seoul is Jongno Street, where you can find the bosingak, a pavilion containing a large historical bell. There are also a great number of religious sites in Seoul, such as the Jogyesa Temple, one of the city's largest Buddhist temples. To learn more about Korean life and culture, visits to the Sejong Cultural Centre, and the National Folk Museum at the Gyeongbokgung Palace are a must.
Other than its historical buildings, Seoul's modern architecture is also noteworthy, Modern landmarks, such as: the Korea Finance Building, N Seoul Tower, the World Trade Center, and Tower Palace dominate the city's skyline.
