| The koala, an arboreal marsupial herbivore, is native to Australia and is undoubtedly an important part of the country's natural and cultural heritage. Although it is not listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List, sadly, its population is declining in some parts of the country. Feeding almost exclusively on eucalypt leaves, koalas have a very low metabolic rate for a mammal. It rests motionless for up to 18 hours a day, sleeping most the time. Although they have a reputation for being 'cute and cuddly', if disturbed, they can be violent, using their teeth and claws to cause considerable injury. So, if you're near a cute koala, proceed with caution! |

Sydney, known as the Harbour City, is situated on Australia's south-east coast. As the state capital of New South Wales, it has played host to countless international sporting, political and cultural events, including the 2000 Summer Olympics, APEC Australia 2007 and World Youth Day 2008. Due to its proximity to the sea, Sydney is surrounded by beaches, and exudes a decidedly laid back atmosphere. Some of its most popular beaches are Bondi, Manly, Coogee and Bronte, which are hotspots for surf, seagulls and sun-block. Here, you can learn how to surf or just hang out at a beach café and watch the beautiful people.
In contrast to the hot and happening beach front, Sydney's hinterland is lush and tranquil. In fact, the city's natural treasures have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are protected as national parks. If you're into nature walks, camping or mountain biking, do visit the Blue Mountains, Sydney Harbour and Royal National Park. You're bound to spot many of the local wildlife, and it's not just wombats and wallabies. Sydney's coastline is part of an annual Humpback whale migration path from Antarctica to the Coral Sea, so look out for these aquatic giants if you're there between June to November.
If you love animals, Taronga Zoo is a definite must. Officially opened in 1916, it is now home to over 2,600 animals. Another zoo, Sydney Wildlife World, is located on the shores of Darling Harbour and is attached to the Sydney Aquarium. It is an indoor zoo featuring a one-kilometre walkway that snakes through 7,000 square metres of enclosures housing around 6,000 native animals. Of course, you can't say you've been to Sydney unless you've seen the iconic Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge or the Sydney Tower. The city's also home to a number of must-see cultural institutions, such as: the Australian Museum, the Powerhouse Museum, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Australian National Maritime Museum.
If you like good food, then you'll quite simply love Sydney. Home to internationally-acclaimed and highly innovative chefs, the city boasts of award-winning wines and exciting restaurants. The city's cultural diversity is reflected in the cuisine on offer, which includes Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Mediterranean and more. While the dining's a dream, the nightlife can be described as dynamic and diverse. There are traditional deco-tiled pubs, sophisticated wine bars and leafy beer gardens, as well as live music and superclubs. The most popular haunts for night owls include Oxford Street, Circular Quay, The Rocks, Cronulla and Parramatta.
Visitors to Sydney won't have any trouble getting around. As a highly cosmopolitan city, it's equipped with an extensive public transport system, which includes trains, taxis, buses and ferry networks. Most visitors to the city arrive via Sydney Airport, which is located in Mascot, just 8 km away. There's also a wide range of accommodation options to choose from, from backpacker to five-star and caravan to farm stay.
If you're planning to visit Sydney for business or pleasure, you'll be required to obtain a Visa prior to arriving in Australia (unless you're a New Zealand national). Their Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) Visa is invisible and therefore will not show up in your passport. You can apply for an ETA online from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs' website, as well as at Australian Embassies and High Commissions. Tourist and Business ETA's will cost around US$18, and processing fees may apply. Tourist Visit ETA's are valid for 12 months from the date of issue and will permit multiple entries into Australia for a stay of up to 3 months on each visit. Visitors who are not eligible for an ETA may apply for Non ETA Visas that will cost around £25. Their validity will be stated on the Visa label in your passport.
