The Black-faced Spoonbill can change colours!
Colectarea fondurilor este în curs ...
The Black-faced Spoonbill previously used Macau as a wintering site but recent studies show that the birds would not visit the man-made wetlands that have been built for them when they fly in search of better climate and food supply in winter. This, together with the destruction of their habitat and threats of pollution, warns that their numbers could diminish further in future. The Black-faced Spoonbill got its name for obvious reasons: Its entire body is white except its beak, lore and legs. This bird is truly unique for during the mating season, an osprey grows on the crowns of both males and females and the breast feathers turn orange. The osprey then falls off and the feathers change back to white when the mating season is over. Their beaks change appearance over time too and is fully patterned after approximately 5 years. The Black-faced Spoonbill was declared critically endangered in 1994 by the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Efforts to protect the bird have resulted in the numbers slightly increasing, but the species is still far from being safe. Hong Kong has declared it a protected species while South Korea recognized it as one of its national monuments. It is our hope that with these efforts, the future generation can get to know this unique bird called the Black-faced Spoonbill.

    Magnificent Macau
de către Lee Sue Ann, scriitor independent
As the only European colony in China, Macau displays a fusion of elements from both East and West, particularly the Portuguese. The city consists of the island and neighbouring districts Taipa and Coloane which are linked by bridges and a causeway. Its close location to Hong Kong and Zhuhai in mainland China makes it a favourite getaway for the Hong Kongers and the Chinese.

Even before the opening of the grand Venetian Macao, Macau was already almost synonymous with gambling and casinos. The Casino Lisboa was the most famous before being the opening of the Sands Casino in 2004. Both are located along the waterfront of southern Macau Peninsula where there are a number of good Portuguese restaurants, bars and restaurants.

The Venetian Macao is a luxury hotel and casino resort owned by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. Modelled after The Venetian in Las Vegas, the Cotai strip in Macau is now referred to the "Las Vegas Strip of the East". Boasting the 4th largest building and the biggest casino in the world, the Venetian Macao is definitely worth a visit for the architecture is simply awesome. For those wanting to try their luck, they would be impressed by its 4 themed gaming areas, 3400 slot machines and 800 gambling tables. For those not keen on gambling, they can instead spend their money at the Venice-styled shopping centre that has rivers running through. The Venetian Macao will surely wow you. The venue also holds international concerts and sporting events.

There are numerous temples, churches, fortresses and other old buildings in Macau that contains a blend of Portuguese and Chinese characteristics. One interesting structure is the Bodhisatta Avalokitesvara which is a statue of the Buddhist deity, Kuan Yin. It is located by the sea near the Sands Casino and the MGM Grand. Although a Chinese deity, it has designs so European that it closely resembles the Virgin Mary in Europe.

There is something in Macau for everyone. The sun-lovers can head to the Hak Sa ("black sand") or Cheok Van ("bamboo bay") beaches, the daring can attempt a bungee jump from the Macau Tower at 233m high, the fearful can just enjoy the spectacular view atop the tower while the history enthusiasts can head over to the Macau Museum or the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History. Then, gather the family or the gang for fun together at the Fisherman's Wharf where there is a shopping centre and a theme park.

The Portuguese have brought elements of Brazil, Goa and Angola together with them when they came to Macau. These elements have resulted in a variety of lip-smacking cuisine. First, sample the local salted cod and the African chicken before indulging in the Portuguese milk pudding. There is also the famous pork cutlet burger and the barbecued pork strips which can be found easily at the street stalls. Another must-have are the mouth-watering Portuguese egg tarts. Created by the Lord Stow's Bakery, head over there for the 'original' Portuguese egg tarts. There are also many other bakeries selling these egg tarts which have made its way everywhere around the world.

Getting around Macau is best on foot, given that the island is small and compact. This is also best as taking a taxi or bus could be tough since most drivers speak very little English. The majority of roads are also one-way, thus going places on wheels could actually take you more time. Car rental is also an option though not very popular s the island is pretty small and easy to cover.
