The flying squirrels can hardly be seen because it is a nocturnal animal and only comes out at night. They live in groups and build their nests in holes in trees. They feed on plant matter such as the bark and willows of birch, aspen, willow and maple trees. They occasionally eat insects too and during the winter, they eat pine nuts and the fruits of the alder tree. Flying squirrels actually do not fly. They glide using their gliding mechanism which is a fold of furry skin stretched taut. They are able to steer directions by using their tails. They are also extremely good at climbing trees as they have sharp claws that give them grip on the tree trunk. The young of the flying squirrels are called kittens, and a squirrel gives birth to 4 kittens each time. The Myohyangsan Flying Squirrels are native to Korea. They have been declared a natural living monument due to their dwindling numbers and every effort is taken to preserve their number.

    Breathtaking Busan
에 의해 Lee Sue Ann, 프리랜서 작가
Busan, or also known as Pusan, is the largest port city in South Korea. It is the second biggest metropolis, second to Seoul. It faces the Korea Straits and its densest areas are situated between the Nakdong and Suyeong rivers in narrow valleys, while mountains separate some of its districts.

Every year, the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) takes place at the PIFF Plaza. The film festival attracts moviegoers from Asia and all around the world. The film festival is a fun night of entertainment that provides a carnival-like atmosphere, with food stalls lining up the streets outside the PIFF Plaza. In the plaza, you will find posters and hand-prints of famous international and Asian stars. Before heading off, don't forget to grab the famed delicious and chewy fried cuttlefish called odagi.

Busan's attractions are all about the sea, since it is a coastal city. First, beat the heat by taking a dip in the beautiful Haeundae beaches. Korea's most popular beach, there are various activities for you to partake in. You can surf with the wind, roar along the coast in motorboats or take a luxurious cruise in a yacht. Of course, if adventure is not your thing, just lay back on the soft white sand and enjoy the breeze, the sun and the view!

Would anyone have thought of going to the market as a place to visit on a holiday? The mere mention of the word 'market' would usually makes you wrinkle up your nose but the markets here in Korea are a different experience altogether. Visit the Busan Cooperative Fish Market at dawn and be surprised to see how lively the market is when fish merchants start auctioning for the best catch of the day. Then, head to the Jagalchi market where the freshest seafood is found. The best part is that you can have them prepared for your meal there and then, eaten fresh and raw!

Next, take a ferry to tour the ocean in Taejongdae. The Yeongdo Lighthouse stands magnificently against the backdrop of beautiful cliffs. Taejongdae got its name from King Muyeol, who was also known as Taejong, of the Silla Dynasty who trained here in martial arts. Once you have seen the ocean from near, have a spectacular view of it from above. Head up to the Dalmaji Hill where you can enjoy the amazing view while having patbingsu, which is shaved ice with red bean toppings and ice-cream. The Haeundae beach is also visible from here.

The Busan Aquarium is definitely worth a visit. See mermaids swimming along the beautiful marine life and gasps when the divers jump in to feed the sharks. It's not often that you get to see sharks up close, and safely too! When night falls, the Gwangan bridge is a lovely sight as the entire bridge is lighted up. The bridge is further illuminated in October during the Busan Fireworks Festival. Finally, if you are feeling a little lucky, drop by at the Seven Luck Casino and take on their Busan Lotte.

Busan is also known for sports and culture. Other than having been the host city for the Asian Games and FIFA World Cup, both in 2002, Busan is also home to the Lotte Giants. The Lotte Giants play in the Korean baseball league and thus, Busan is known as the capital of baseball in Korea. Also, every two years, the Busan Biennale takes place. It is a well renowned international contemporary art exhibition that attracts art lovers from all over the world.

Subways take you almost all tourist attractions including the PIFF Plaza. Food worthy of trying, other than the odagi, patbingsu and the raw fish mentioned above, are the duck bulgogi, seafood soup, swellfish soup, grilled eel and stir fried octopus. These delicacies can be found easily at any corner of Busan. Seafood is definitely a must-have here in Busan, for its location close to the sea ensures that you get the freshest, finest and sweetest seafood you'll ever find!
