    Bring the Oriental Storks back
E' in corso la raccolta fondi..
The Oriental Storks (Ciconia boyciana) were once found in Korea and China but their existence has been threatened that they have totally vanished and are not found in either places anymore. They feed on fish and frogs. They catch their prey using their beaks, which they also tap to make noises as they don't have a cry or a chirp. These birds are also capable of eating snakes and bugs. Tree clearing has made it difficult for the Oriental Storks to build nests. Irresponsible people hunt them too, and their already low number is further threatened when the use of pesticides kill fish, their main food item. Fortunately, there are already a number of efforts to preserve the Oriental Storks. The birds are bred, taught to fend for themselves in the wild before being released. Even though there aren't many birds who are raised this way, it is still a positive sign of preserving the earth's creatures.

    Delightful Daegu
Da Lee Sue Ann, Scrittore freelance
Daegu's official name is Daegu Metropolitan City. It is South Korea's fourth largest city and is often considered to its third city. Daegu is located near the Nakdong River and thrives in the manufacturing industry. In 1998, Daegu set up a relationship with Milan and adapted the slogan 'Colourful Daegu' in 2006 in its attempt in promoting the fashion industry based on its textile and clothing manufacturing industries.

Daegu's top tourist attraction would have to be Mount Palgongsan. Reaching 1192m above sea level, the shape of the mountain resembles and eagle and has been long regarded as a holy mountain. You can see pagodas and Buddhist statues adorning the mountain as if they have fallen from the sky. The most frequented temple is the Donghwasa Temple. Built during the Silla kingdom, this temple is a beautiful sight especially with stream and ridges surrounding the serene place of worship.

It is believed that the Gatbawi Buddha fulfils a prayer each year, so head there and make a wish if you are Buddhist. The Gatbawi is a Buddha statue with a stone hat on his head. It stands 4m and has been designated as one of the National Treasures of Korea. Many other sites, structures, figurines and temples surrounding the area have also been declared as a national treasure worth protecting.

Daegu has a wide variety of 'home specialties' that cannot be easily found in other parts of South Korea. Gukbab is rice and beef broth traditionally served mixed in a bowl but the ttaro-gukbab is different in a sense that the rice and broth are served separately, which is suggested by its name 'ttaro' which means 'separation'. Then, there is the gomtang which is oxtail soup that has been enjoyed for generations. Another beefy dish is the jjim-galbi. It is steamed beef ribs seasoned with ginger, hot pepper, garlic and other spices. This dish is talked about not particularly for its taste but rather its uniqueness of being served in a dented nickel-silver bowl. Try this for the strange experience! Don't waste any of the good seasonings after you have finished the beef, for you can mix it with the rice and there you can savour the tasty concoction again!

Restaurants nearby the Hwawon resort, Yongyeonsa temple, and the Gangchang area long the Nakdong river are known for their delicious fish cuisine. The catfish hot stew and steamed carp are Daegu's specialties and it would be a waste not to sample the sweet fresh seafood if you are around the vicinity. There is also the chueotang loach soup which is purportedly good for the skin's elasticity, builds immunity and benefits the respiratory system. Not sure what the loach is? Google it, and then make sure you try it!

Had enough of meat? Try the cheondubu bean curd which are made fresh on the spot or the sundubu traditional un-curdled bean curd. Good especially for the elderly, it has a savoury taste and is easily digested. It looks like your trip to Daegu would definitely be an adventurous food trip!
