Yangon, at one time called Rangoon, and the country, Burma, by the British. It is a small busy capital city and as such has the workings of government within its boundaries. Situated on the River Yangon, it has a flourishing port, but the most spectacular sights are the Buddhist temples, pagodas and stupas. Located in southern Myanmar, the important port city of Yangon boasts many spectacular pagodas, lakes, shady parks and fine examples of colonial period architecture.
The Shwedagon Pagoda which can be seen from some distance across the plains given its height, is impressive. The pagoda remains one of the most important Buddhist sites in the world, but is very much part of contemporary life in Yangon. It's open from dawn, and Buddhists will go to the pagoda from early morning to late evening.
The Bago is one of the richest archeological sites of Burma. Built during the fifteenth century, its about 50 miles north of Rangoon by car and can make for an interesting day trip if you yearn to get out of the city and experience a bit of Burma's rural side.
Thanlyin was formerly known as Syriam. Myanmar usually pronounce as "Tanyin". It is a city in Yangon Division in Myanmar. It is located on the bank of Yangon River, and is a major port. A brief excursion from Yangon will allow you to visit this small town that was once an important centre for commerce under Portuguese influence. Thanlyin offers to the sightseer a series of temples that have been built on an island that rises in the middle of the river and that can be easily reached by boat.
Twante is known for its ceramic handicrafts, traditional cotton weaving and the Shwesandaw Paya. The boat trip provides a view of life along the canal while Twante itself provides interest as a center of pottery and hand-woven cotton cloth. The pottery town of Twante is famous for the 21-mile-long canal that runs between the Ayeyawady Delta and the Yangon River. Twante can be reached by land or river from Yangon. It is only 15 miles away from Yangon. The streets of Twante are littered with so many beautiful pots of different sizes & shapes. |
